Repeating an automation
When setting up an automation, you'll have an option to repeat it for contacts who have completed it. To enable it, simply tick the toggle on the first page of the automation setup:
You can also enable this for existing automations by going to the Settings section:
There are a few rules that prevent automations from repeating too many times or breaking your desired sequence:
- A contact must not already be in progress of the automation – it first needs to complete the automation before it can trigger it again.
- A contact must not have started the automation within the last 24 hours – this means a contact can only trigger an automation once a day.
- An automation can not repeat itself – this means we don't support automation loops. An automation can be re-triggered manually (by adding a tag, changing a field etc.), through import, integration, the API or another automation.
- The "Contact added" trigger does not support repeats – this is because a contact can only be added to a list once.
What can you use this option for?
If you'd like to send a thank-you note anytime someone buys something from your shop, you can create a field "last purchase" and use it as a trigger (contact field updated). Then make sure that your shop is connected to your EmailOctopus list and that the "last purchase" value is updated when a new purchase is completed.
Similarly, you can use this option if you'd like to deliver some content to your subscribers anytime they fill out a form, update some of their data in your CRM, etc.
You can also create a re-engagement or list-cleaning automation and periodically trigger it for your list, either via another automation or manually, by adding a tag or updating a field.
This option allows for many more scenarios – feel free to contact us if you need help implementing your specific scenario.
Be careful when importing a file into your list and using the "update contact" option – if the import matches the trigger (for example, updating a field), all the eligible contacts will re-trigger the automation.
