Triggering automations based on sign-up source

If you have a single list, you can send different automations to contacts signing up through various landing pages or forms. For example, if you're an author and your contacts sign up to receive a specific ebook, you can use automation to send them different content based on their sign-up source. This can be done by adding tags or custom fields to forms and setting up trigger filters in automations.

In this article, we'll show you how to assign specific tags to forms and landing pages created on EmailOctopus and trigger different automations based on those tags.

First, you'll need a way to identify contacts coming from a specific source. If you're using our forms or landing pages, you can set them up to add a tag to new contacts. You can also use custom fields for this.

For instance, if you have a landing page you use for your newsletter, you can add the tag "newsletter" to this landing page.

This can be done by clicking on the form itself - you should then see the option to add a tag in the left panel:

Once you add a tag to a specific landing page or form, all contacts who sign up using that page or form will be assigned the tag you chose. You can repeat this process for all forms and landing pages.

If you're using third-party forms integrated with EmailOctopus, you can check with their support if they allow to add hidden tags and/or fields.

After setting up all your forms and landing pages to add a specific tag after the sign-up, you can create separate automations that you want to trigger based on the sign-up source.

To make sure that your automation is only triggered for contacts coming from a specific source, you'll need to add a Filter to your trigger. You can set it up by clicking on "Filter" right underneath your chosen trigger:

Now, it's time to specify the filter. If you want your automation to be triggered only for contacts with a specific tag, you'll need to set up the filter based on this tag. Here's an example of the filter setup based on the tag "newsletter:"

This way, your automation will only add contacts who meet the filter's criteria. In this case, it will only be triggered for subscribers signing up with the specified tag, which will be added to your contacts at the point of the sign-up.
